The Formed Police Unit (FPU) of the Ghana Police Service Special Multipurpose Vehicle with registration number GP2630 has been abandoned at Alavanyo in the Volta Region at the mercy of the weather after residents chased them out of the community.

The vehicle which bears scars from stones and bullets has been at its current location for the past one year according to the commanding officer at the FPU headquarters Chief Superintendent Henry Otoo.

After to and fro between the Ghana police headquarters and the Police Training School which houses the FPU headquarters at Tesano, contact was finally made with the commanding officer Chief Superintendent Henry Otoo who told MyNewsGh.com “we are aware the vehicle is there. We have been waiting for a report on the vehicle and now that it (report) has been submitted to the headquarters, we hope to bring that vehicle down here (Accra) for servicing”.

He added that “the vehicle has been there for over a year before I came to this office last November”. Chief Superintendent Otoo indicated that the total number of such vehicles cannot be disclosed for security reasons but to add that, the abandoned one at Alavanyo will not be left there for long.

According to one Joshua a youth leader in the community, he said “the vehicle was deployed to Alavanyo at the heat of clashes between the youth and the security men and that resulted in the visible stone and bullet wounds on the vehicle”

The vehicle in its current state has its four tyres flat and window glasses broken.

The paramount chief for Alavanyo, Torgbe Atakora VII indicated that, there is the need for the community to have a police station which the citizens have offered to support with communal labour but observed that since the clash between the police and the youth, the security men are scared to step in the town for the fear of their lives.
