Police arrest 17 "landguards"

Accra, Nov. 16, GNA - The Greater Accra Regional Police on Monday arrested 17 suspected land guards at Avenor in Accra following clashes over a piece of land between two groups of people that resulted in the death of two people.

Giving details of the clashes Chief Inspector Kweku Dompreh, Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Headquarters, said there was a court order on the ownership of the land in favour of the World Miracle Church (WMC) that led to the demolition of structures on the land last week.

He said police had information Monday morning about a shooting incident involving the two parties, one side claiming to be contracted by the WMC to build a church complex and the other claiming to be people on the land.

The land guards who claimed they were contracted by the WMC to build the church complex went to the site in a white Mercedes Benz bus with registration number GT 4034W and it was set ablaze by the other party, Chief Inspector Dompreh added.

He said the police retrieved one pump action gun, two butcher's knives, cutlasses and live cartridges.

He said several people were injured. Police are investigating the incident.
