Hooligans from Sankore in the Asunafo South Constituency of the Brong-Ahafo Region, who reportedly attacked the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Eric Opoku and caused damage to his property, including vehicles, are being hunted by the police.
This is the second time Mr Opoku, who was the regional minister under President Mahama, has been attacked and the police are yet to establish the motive behind the attacks.
The regional police command has said it’s investigating the incident, as the miscreants are being pursued.
The unknown assailants reportedly attacked the home of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP at about 2 am Sunday but it was not clear whether the MP was at home at the time.
The hooligans, allegedly wielding offensive weapons such as guns and cutlasses, damaged the MP’s vehicles namely, V8 Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number AE 9449-14, KIA Spectra registered AE 2667-13 and VW Passat with registration number AE 3328-14.
They also caused damage to sliding doors and windows in his private residence before they reportedly fled into the bush.
A brother in-law of the MP, Yaw Frimpong, who was in the house at the time of the incident, told the police that the leader of the gang was one Godfred Amponsah from Kwadwo Mankushie, near Sankore.
Mr Frimpong said Godfred Amponsah led guys with names like Anointing, Figo, Agya Mose and Bullet to the house and claimed they were all wielding guns and machetes.
According to DAILY GUIDE sources, after the incident, the attackers went further to assault another victim, Thomas Amponsah, at Amelody, allegedly inflicting cutlass wounds on his head and destroying properties.
Another victim, who was said to have been brutally assaulted, was one Adam Seidu aka Red, whose GH¢10,400, a TV set and a decoder were taken away.
Two other persons – Prince Nyarko and Jona Boakye – also sustained various degrees of injury during the attacks and were rushed to the Star of Hope Hospital at Sankore where they were treated and discharged.
Regional Police PRO, Chief Inspector Kingsley Oppong, confirmed to DAILY GUIDE that the police were hunting for the perpetrators and added that all those who suffered the attacks are believed to be supporters of the NDC.
It would be recalled that the Asunafo South MP was attacked barely four months ago (on Christmas day) at his private residence at Sankore.
Meanwhile, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency has condemned the attacks and appealed passionately to the police to arrest the perpetrators.
Nana Adusei Opoku, Communications Director of the NPP in the constituency, said on Citi FM in Accra that “the NPP in Asunafo South does not support some of these things. In fact, we were the same persons who spoke against some of these obnoxious acts when we were in opposition.
“We solidarise with our MP even though he belongs to the other side of the political divide. We think that some of these things do not help the constituency to move forward. Crime has no colour and you being an NPP member does not exonerate you from the courts if you are found to be the culprit of a crime. So if it happens that some of our members are behind this thing, the police should take over and the courts will deal with them,” the NPP maintained.
