Police at Wulensi in the Northern Region has revealed it is investigating a report of an alleged assault by a poling agent of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the ongoing limited voters registration exercise against the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, George Lalirir Maban

The legislator on Monday, reportedly launched a violent attack on the victim Mr. Peche Nsando at Opijua registration centre when the poling agent prevented some people believed to have been bused from Damanko in the Volta Region by the MP from registration.

Injured Nsando told Ultimate News Eliasu Tanko that the MP pounced on him with strokes of heavy slaps on his cheek and tore his shirt in the process when he protested that the people could not be registered in the constituency and demanded they should be sent back

“Yesterday, the registration the forms almost got finished so we were waiting for people to come and register, soon the MP loaded people in a motor Kia (tricycle) to the centre but I told him the people were not from the area but from Damanko in the Volta region so I won’t allow them. The MP asked me why I was calling the people strangers and that this was what we did and caused war at Bimbilla; I found it distasteful and when I was about to advice he just held my shirt and slapped me while people were looking”, Peche disclosed

The Poling agent claimed he sustained head injuries in the attack and was given a police medical form to see a doctor at the Bimbilla hospital or Kpandai hospital after officially lodging a complaint.

Confirming the incident, the Wulensi Police station officer, Chief Inspector Ayuba, said he received a distressed call on Monday about the case but he told the complainant to lodge a formal complaint at the police station.

He subsequently revealed on Tuesday afternoon that a formal case of assault has been made against the MP. According to him the police would be inviting the MP for questioning.

The MP has however denied the allegation saying he was at the said registration centre but never assaulted the NPP poling agent as claimed.
