Police officers posthumously promoted

Accra, Sept. 25, GNA - The Police Administration has posthumously promoted two Police Officers who were killed in the course of their duties.

A statement issued by the Administration named the Officers, as General Sergeant John Akpakli and General Constable Kojo Kakraba.

They were shot and killed by suspected armed robbers in the Upper West and Upper East Regions respectively.

Sergeant Akpakli was born on November 21 1956 and was enlisted into the Ghana Police Service on the November 17 1980.

The statement said on October 30, 2004 Sergeant Akpakli, who was stationed at Lambussie Police Station received information that the youth of Lambussie had arrested some armed robbers who had attacked a house in the town and that one of the robbers had escaped.

The statement said Sergeant Akpakli, with assistance from the people of the towns mounted a search for the escaped robber and on their way to a nearby village, an unidentified person ambushed them and shot at the vehicle on which they were travelling, resulting in the death of Sergeant Akpakli and the driver.

The Police Administration, having recognised that Sergeant Akpakli died during the course of his duty and in the defence of the public, has promoted him posthumously, to the rank of Chief Inspector with effect from October 30, 2004.

The Statement said Constable Kojo Kakraba was born on June 6 1977 and enlisted into the Ghana Police Service on January 10 2003. It said, on August 2005 1, Constable Kakraba, who was stationed at the Upper East Regional Police Headquarters, Bolgatanga was travelling on the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway at 0200 hours.

On reaching a section of the road, he encountered a group of armed robbers who had attacked and robbed some passengers on a bus. He managed to arrest two of the robbers but some of the robbers, who were hiding in the bush shot and killed him.

In line with the Police Service regulation, the Police Administration has accordingly promoted him posthumously to the rank of Sergeant with effect from August 1, 2005 for exhibiting zeal and bravery in the course of his duty and in the defence of the public. The full benefits of the deceased would be paid to their beneficiaries based on their new ranks, the statement added.
