A two-day refresher training workshop for police prosecutors in the Northern Region, aimed at building on their knowledge and skills to improve their work to speed up justice delivery, has ended in Tamale.

Thirteen police prosecutors took part in the training, which was also aimed at improving the relationship between them and lawyers from the Office of the Attorney General (AG) to improve justice delivery.

The workshop consisted of classroom lectures during, which subjects on criminal law, law of evidence, criminal procedure, and courtroom practices, were taught by State Attorneys and other legal practitioners from the Bar and the Bench.

It was organised by Law and Development Associates (LADA) Institute with support from the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), an agency under the United States Department of State.

It formed part of a programme to build the capacity of police prosecutors in specific areas of criminal prosecution and general principles of law and criminal and justice, to address the apparent gap in the education and skills of police officers that are appointed to prosecute crimes on behalf of the AG.

Mr Mark Ofori-Amanfo, Managing Director of LADA Group, who spoke during the closing of the training in Tamale on Tuesday, said the refresher training was to help improve the number of quality prosecutions undertaken by the police prosecutors.

LADA Institute had already trained the participants on various aspects of law and criminal prosecution, and had also sent lawyers to observe their practice at the courtroom, hence designing the refresher course to fill the loopholes to improve their delivery.

Mr Ofori-Amanfo said LADA Institute had provided police prosecutors with a manual to guide them especially on criminal law to ensure successful prosecution of cases.

He said so far, 485 police prosecutors had been trained under the programme leading to quality prosecutions.

He urged the Police Administration and the AG’s Department to take up the challenge to continue training their officers to ensure improved performance.

Chief Superintendent of Police, Madam Regina Addo Yobo from the Tamale District Police Command, who participated in the refresher training, said the law evolved adding the refresher training, therefore, was an eye opener, which would help them to be effective at prosecutions.
