Accra, Oct. 22, GNA - The Police at the Cocoa Affairs Court on Friday saved two lawyers defending 20 accused persons arrested in connection with a murder case at Danchira in Greater Accra Region from being manhandled.
Mr Acquaye Bruce Thompson and Mr Owusu Sekyere incurred the wrath of the crowd for allegedly applying for bail for three of the accused persons.
The 20 persons are charged with conspiracy, murder and causing unlawful damage.
After the court's sitting, the two lawyers left the court but the crowd clad in red and numbering about 50 descended on Mr Thompson amidst profane insults. Police personnel at the court intervened and saved Mr Thompson.
Three of the accused persons - James Commey, George Ayittey and Nii Faite, aka Tetteh Oko - were admitted to bail by the court presided over by Mr E.K. Baffour after physically assessing their condition. Based on the accused persons' medical report and application put in by the two lawyers, the court admitted them to bail. When the case was called, it was adjourned to Wednesday, October 27.
Although the 17 other accused persons who are on remand were not brought to court, relatives of the deceased vented their anger on the two lawyers.
Re-enforcement from the Greater Accra Regional command arrived to help the court police but had little to do since the crowd had dispersed.
On March 23 this year, fighting broke out among the youth of Danchira in which four persons lost their lives and properties running into several millions of cedis were destroyed. The deceased were: Aboye Tetteh, Nii Juabeng Armarh Abu, Mohammed Armarh and Nii Darkey Mustapha.
