Police team formed to deal armed robberies

Accra, Sept. 25, GNA - A team of Police Officers drawn from the National Headquarters, CID Headquarters, Accra and Tema Regions have been formed to deal with armed robberies within the Accra-Tema Metropolis and other parts of the country.

This is in response to the spate of robberies that have occurred in Accra, Tema and certain parts of the country in recent times. A release signed by the Director of Public Affairs, DSP David Eklu said there have been recurring reports of armed robberies on the highways, streets and within residential areas within Accra and Tema and other parts of the country.

The team, which has started operations, is concentrating on tracking down armed robbers, identifying the sources of supplies of weapons and those who buy stolen items.

The team, in operations undertaken within the past five days, has so far arrested a number of suspects, seized a number of locally manufactured guns, and items believed to be stolen.

The Police have also mapped out more vigorous strategies to address this problem and the exercise will continue in all parts of the country. Random checks on suspected vehicles, persons and places may be conducted and the public are entreated to show understanding in the national interest.

The police wishes to assure the public of its commitment to fight this disturbing crime and calls for full public co-operation by providing vital information on criminals and criminal activities. Meanwhile, Areeba has activated the emergency line 191 for Accra, Kumasi and Tema for its customers. Discussions are also going on with other mobile phone service providers to offer toll-free numbers to enable the public to reach the Police during emergencies.
