Gomoa Dominase (C/R), Aug 18, GNA - The Police have been urged not to mishandle suspects during arrest or in detention. Mr George Loh, an Executive Member of Legal Outreach Programme (LOPs), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), which sensitises the public on legal issues, made the call saying, suspects remain innocent until proved guilty by the law courts.
He urged the police to explain the offence to the suspect in a language he or she understands when effecting arrest. Mr Loh, who was addressing a legal sensitisation forum at Gomoa Dominase in the Central Region, cautioned the public to desist from meting out instant justice to suspects.
Mr Alexander Graham, also an executive member of LOPs, appealed to Ghanaians to match their rights with their responsibilities, adding that it was unpatriotic for one to insist on his or her rights but to shirk his or her responsibilities.
Mr Graham stated that people should know where their freedom ended in order not to infringe on the rights of others. Ms Mariama Opoku-Kessie, a member of the organisation, appealed to District Assemblies to enact bye-laws to protect children.
