Political parties urged to promote the growth of the citizenry

Accra, Oct.3 GNA-The National Catholic Secretariat on Friday called on political parties in the country to campaign on issues that would promote the growth of the citizenry.

A statement signed by Most Reverend Lucas Abadamloora, Bishop of Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishop's Conference said Political parties should give the citizenry clear options on specific policies to be pursued. "We enjoin all Ghanaians to inform themselves as thoroughly as possible, as to the claims, intentions and purposes of the various candidates and political parties.It is very necessary that each one has the freedom to speak his or her mind and to accord others the same freedom ,without rancour and malice" It said. The statement urged all the political parties to strengthen their internal systems and structures in order to curb all incidences of hooliganism and intolerance.

It called on the law enforcement agencies to be proactive, decisive and professional in addressing and responding to lawlessness. "Our constitution mandates the security agencies to ensure peace and stability through the promotion of the rule of law. All agencies are expected to be impartial in the discharge of their duty by ensuring a level praying ground for all citizens," it said. The statement called on the media to preserve with pride, its noble duty to inform, educate and promote intelligent debate of issues. "We have observed with some concern, certain attitudes, positions, statements and do not only suggest but reinforce violence in our body politic. In as much as we appreciate the crucial nature of election 2008, we would like to remind all of us the need to preserve and deepen the peace we enjoy as a country," it said. The statement called on Ghanaians to seek the guidance of Almighty God for the wisdom and right judgement in selecting leaders for the country.
