President Kufuor departs for Portugal

Accra, Dec. 7, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor, left Accra last night for Lisbon, Portugal, where he would attend the European Union (EU)-African Union(AU) summit.
He was accompanied by some senior government officials. A release signed by Mr Andrew Awuni, Press Secretary to the President, said the summit which was scheduled for December 8 and 9, would discuss contemporary global issues that affected the two continents, and also establish the basis for a long-term strategic partnership between Europe and Africa.
It said the summit was also expected to adopt a Joint Strategy and an Action plan to deal with the many outstanding commitments in Trade, Aid, and Development assistance made in the past. Peace and security, democracy and human rights, migration as well as energy and climate change are also to be discussed at the summit, the release said.
It said eighty countries that made up the EU-AU Partnership as well as Heads of Regional Institutions from both continents would be attending the Lisbon summit.
At the airport to see off President Kufuor were senior government officials, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. J.B. Danquah, the Deputy Inspector Genneral of Police, Mrs Elizabeth Mills Robertson, and other senior military and police personnel.
