President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Edward Abambire Bawa as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

His appointment takes effect from January 17, 2025.

This was contained in a letter signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, and dated January 17, 2025.

The letter stated, "His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, in accordance with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 10(2) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Act, 1983 (P.N.D.C.L. 64), has appointed you as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation pending receipt of the required advice of the Honourable Minister for Energy, in consultation with the Public Services Commission."

In the early 1980s, the government established a new statutory and legal framework for petroleum exploration, as well as institutional capacity, to accelerate the country’s Exploration and Production (E&P) efforts.

Additionally, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Law, 1983 (P.N.D.C.L. 64), and the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Law, 1984 (P.N.D.C.L. 84), were enacted.

Prior to the establishment of GNPC in 1983, the well count onshore and offshore Ghana was 54, while 2D seismic coverage remained considerably sparse.

GNPC subsequently funded the acquisition of several vintages of 2D seismic data over blocks onshore and offshore Tano, the offshore Saltpond basin, and the onshore and offshore Keta basin.

This led to densely gridded 2D seismic coverage offshore, attracting more oil and gas companies to Ghana.
