President Mahama promotes CDS, other service chiefs to new ranks

President John Dramani Mahama has promoted five security chiefs within the Ghana Armed Forces.

They are Major General William Agyapong, who becomes the new Chief of Defence Staff; Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, as Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing as Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, Chief of Air Staff; while 0Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai will be Chief of Staff.

A statement dated Monday, March 24, 2025, and signed by the Minster of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced that the promotions take effect immediately.

"President John Dramani Mahama, Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, has promoted the following officers to senior leadership roles, effective March 24, 2025, on the advice of the Armed Forces Council, Major General William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, Chief of Army Staff Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, Chief of Naval Staff, Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, Chief of Air Staff, and Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, Chief of Staff," it noted.

It reaffirmed the commitment of the new security chiefs in protecting the country's territorial borders.

The new promotions come after President John Mahama appointed a new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), after sacking the outgoing CDS, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah.
