President Mills' body leaves for Independence Square

The casket containing the mortal remains of President John Evans Atta Mills has left the Banguet Hall of the State House for the Independence Square where the funeral service will be held.

The casket, draped in national colours with a bouquet of flowers placed on top of it, was carried from the Hall by pall bearers of the Ghana Air Force and placed on a gun carriage as the late commander -in-chief is accorded full military honours.

The funeral cortege is led by despatch riders while military horse riders from the mounted squadron of the recce regiment are giving the gun carriage close escort.

The last post was sounded as the gun carriage moved.

All along the route, large crowds of people clad in the traditional red and black mourning cloth have lined up on both sides of the streets, waving farewell as the carriage makes its way to the Independence Square.**
