Many have described the recent tariff increment as sheer wickedness on the part of the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), after it announced that electricity and water tariffs have been increased by 59.2 percent and 67.2 percent respectively.

But Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency is blaming the increment on President John Dramani Mahama, saying he does not have Ghanaians at heart.

The Director of Public Affairs at the PURC, Nana Yaa Jantuah, who announced the tariff hike said - “As we grow in generation demands, and add more thermal plants, cost also increases.”

The increment is coming amidst a protracted energy crisis christened “Dumsor”, a difficulty Ghanaians have endured for over four years together with perennial water shortages in many communities of the country.

However, the NPP MP, in an exclusive interview with Peacefmonline.com, described President Mahama as “insensitive” as he has within this year increased utility bills three times without adding a penny to workers salaries.

She grimaced that President John Mahama wants to take Ghanaians for granted with this current increment in utility tariffs, asserting that the motive of the NDC government to bring in the power barges was to force them down the throat of Ghanaians to pay for the fuel to power the barges.

“It takes only insensitive President like Mahama to force his people to pay more for insufficient electricity power supply and irregular water flow in this country at a point where salaries have not increased once, but utility bills have been increased three times within this year,” she bemoaned.

She insisted Ghanaians cannot be forced to pay for any further utility hike when their living conditions are worsening daily under the NDC economic mismanagement.
