President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday announced that government would soon launch a special initiative on roads to facilitate movement of goods and services within the country.
He said the initiative, which would begin in the Eastern Region under the road infrastructure project would also complete all on-going road projects and initiate new ones. President Mahama announced this when he undertook a two-hour road inspection of the Awoshie- Anyaa- Ablekuma- Pokuase roads in the Greater Accra Region.
He said roads had over the years served as a major draw-back to socio-economic activities and therefore the launching of the initiative would help to catapult economic activities in both the rural and urban areas.
Apart from road construction, government with the support of the African Development Bank is also constructing 14 schools along the road, a bus terminal at the Anyaa Township and ultra- modern market in Anyaa. Government would also build a hospital at Ofankor and step up water distribution to 30 kilometres within that catchment area.
President Mahama said Ashaiman roads and other major ones throughout the country would be captured under the same initiative to ease congestion and give commuters alternative routes in their movements. He appealed to the contractors to expedite action to complete their projects on schedule to reduce the burden that commuters had had to bear for the few past years.
Mr Abass Awulu, Chief Director of Urban Roads who conducted President Mahama round the projects said the terminal at the Anyaa market would have a police station, shops, day care centre and a clinic to cater for the needs of the commercial population. He said most parts of the road projects are 98 per cent complete.
Mr Awulu said government had paid compensation to all residents that were affected by the road construction. He announced that a number of traffic lights would be installed along the road to check over speeding and other forms of misbehavior.
President Mahama was accompanied by Mr Prosper Douglas Bani, Chief of Staff, Nii Afotey Agbo, Regional Manager and Mr Ade Coker, Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress.
