A Second Class Officer with the Ghana Prisons Service, Abimlai Nankpa, has been jailed 13 years for unlawfully possessing Indian hemp at the premises of the Ankaful Maximum Prisons.

Officer Nankpa was jailed by the Cape Coast Circuit Court ‘3’.

Officer Nankpa who is a staff of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit of the Prisons Service according to presiding judge Justice Afia Amankwaa is guilty of processing and hurling quantities of the banned substance into the Ankaful Maximum Prisons.

He is said to have thrown the banned substance from the outside of the prisons specifically over the long walls of the prisons ostensibly to his target.

A search on him by some officers on duty at the time saw some substances which later passed for Indian hemp as he had already hurled some parcels of the banned substance over the walls of the prisons to his targets in there.

The action of the culprit according to the trial judge is unbecoming of an officer of the prisons service who has a duty to help in the reformation of the prisoners under their care.

Officer Nankpa who has begun his 13 year jail term at the Ankaful Maximum Prisons is set to be dismissed by the Prison’s Service as an enquiry had already been opened against him far back in 2016 when the incident happened.
