Professor Fred Newton Binka, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) with five other individuals, were at the weekend declared, “Volta Heroes” for contributing immensely towards the development of the Volta Region and Ghana.

The other five persons are; Mr Edward Kofi Ahiabor, Mr Austin Asamoa-Tutu, the Very Reverend Japhet Yao Letsa, the Very Reverend Dr. Livingstone Komla Buama and Ex-Warrant Officer Class 1, Michael Ahelegbe.

The six were celebrated at the third Volta Heroes Foundation (VHF) awards dinner dance in Ho and given plaques and citations for their achievements and positive impact on society.

Mr Akwasi Oppong Ofosu, a Minister of State at the Presidency, congratulated the heroes and commended the Volta Region for instituting an award scheme to celebrate excellence.

“Heroes are people who do not make newspaper headlines but make positive impact on society and it is good a progressive society like Volta Region identifies and honours you,” he stated.

Mr Ofosu said identifying heroes meant, ‘knowing ourselves’ and challenged other regions to initiate schemes to recognise and celebrate hard work and excellence.

“Unfortunately, we don’t celebrate our heroes in Ghana, but we must begin now,” he said.

Mr Rockson Dogbegah, the initiator of the award scheme, said the idea was to identify and celebrate individuals in both the public and private sectors whose exceptional works in any field contributed immensely to the development of the Volta Region and Ghana.

VHF has celebrated a total of 18 persons since its inception in 2013, seven persons were honoured in the maiden edition, five in 2014 and six this year.
