Accra, Jan. 03, GNA - The President-Elect, Professor John Evans Atta Mills won eight out of 10 regions while the candidate of the outgoing ruling New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won two regions during the Presidential Election Runoff.
Prof. Mills won the Western Region with 414,144 votes representing 51.9 per cent; Central Region with 378,975 votes, representing 53.8 per cent; Greater Accra with 953,086 votes representing 54.4 per cent; Volta with 630,899 votes with 86.1 per cent; Brong Ahafo with 408,029 votes representing 51.5 per cent.
The other regions were; Northern Region, 500,953 votes representing 61.6 per cent; Upper East Region, 223,994 votes representing 65.6 per cent and the Upper West Region, 134,926 votes representing 62.3 per cent.
Nana Akufo-Addo won the Ashanti Region with 1,438,820 votes representing 75.0 per cent and the Eastern Region with 536,366 votes representing 57.5 per cent.
In the first round of polls on December 7 Nana Akufo-Addo won three regions but lost the Brong Ahafo Region to Prof. Atta Mills in the Runoff.
The statistics indicate that National voter turn-out was 72.9 per cent; the Ashanti Region recorded the highest voter turn-out of 83.31 per cent while the Western Region recorded the lowest turn-out of 66.48 per cent.
The percentage turn-out of other regions were: Central Region, 70.03 per cent; Greater Accra, 70.02 per cent; Volta, 73.11 per cent; Eastern, 72.16 per cent; Brong Ahafo, 68.83 per cent; Northern, 75.34 per cent; Upper East, 70.26 per cent and Upper West, 67.24 per cent.
The statistics indicate that the voter turn-out increased marginally from the December 7 results of 8,671,272 total votes cast representing 69.52 percent of total registered voters of 12,472,758 to 9,094,364 votes representing 72.9 per cent.
Electoral Statistics from the Research and Monitoring Department of the EC made available to the Ghana News Agency indicated that in the December 7 Election Nana Akufo-Addo obtained 4,159,439 votes representing 49.13 per cent, while Prof Mills obtained 4,056,634 votes representing 47.92 per cent.
In the Runoff the total rejected votes were 92,886 votes representing 1.02 per cent; a total valid vote cast was 9,094,364 votes while the total valid vote was 9,001,478 votes, whiles in the first round of polls the total rejected ballot is 205,438 representing 2.4 per cent of 8,671,272 votes cast.
In the 1996 a total of 111,108 votes were rejected representing 1.53 per cent of 7,256,872 vote cast; in Election 2000, the number of rejected ballot dropped to 104,214 representing 1.58 per cent of 6,605,084 votes cast.
In Election 2004, the total rejected votes amounted to 188,123 representing 2.13 per cent of 8,813,908 votes cast. 03 Dec. 09
