Psychiatric Hospital: Unpaid contractors stop food supply

There is looming crises at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital as contractors have stopped supplying the facility with essential items due to unpaid debts.

The only contractor left has also threatened to stop supplying food to the hospital if management fails to pay their debts which has been blamed on government's failure to release grants due the facility.

The Deputy Director of Nursing in Charge of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Emmanuel Pappoe, in an interview with Starr News said, "our financial situation in this hospital is very very bad. We are owing a lot of contractors and some who bring disinfectants, and other basic things have all stopped.

“We owe food contractors as at now, they have all stopped coming, it is left with only one contractor who is feeling for us and he is assisting us…but we also owe him, and he is threatening to stop and I understand he even wants to drag us to court".

According to Pappoe, there is also shortage of drugs at the facility making it difficult to deal with the patients.

“The drugs are not forthcoming though we have some but that cannot last for long, as at now we have been buying the drugs and without the drugs they [patients] cannot exist, we cannot nurse them”.

He added that the hospital is now depending on the little donations to mitigate the impacts of the challenges bedeviling it.

Mr. Pappoe made this known when the Devine Mother and Child Foundation, a Koforidua based NGO in collaboration with Joy Industries, donated items such as toiletries, second hand clothes and other items worth GHc3000 to the Hospital on Monday.
