Pupils studying under trees at Oyibi

Some students of the Kpone-Katamanso District Assembly (KKDA) Junior High School at Oyibi have no classrooms and therefore study under trees.

While their seniors sit comfortably in their classrooms and study, the form one 'A' and 'B' classes have to manage under the trees behind the school building.

The school, which is located near one of the major roads in Oyibi, does not show any sign of deprivation until one goes behind the school.

When the Ghana News Agency visited the school premises to cover a programme, the pupils were seen sitting on their dual desks arranged under two big trees with white boards mounted in front of them.

Information gathered at the school indicated that the old school, which was built with clay was reconstructed in 1971 and currently has a population of about 366 students.

Studying under the tree is a rite of passage since every pupil has to study under the trees before moving into a classroom when they reached form two.

When the rains come, the pupils studying under the trees either relocate to the school veranda or occupy one of the form two classrooms while their seniors merged into one classroom depending on the intensity of the rain, which often disrupt their studies.

Meanwhile, Mr Mohammed A. Yakubu, Kpone-Katamanso District Coordinating Director, has expressed shock at the situation, noting that, "my attention was drawn to the situation and I can't believe it”.

Mr Yakubu, however, gave the assurance that the Assembly has linked up with the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to provide a six-classroom block for the Oyibi area.

He added that due to lack of land, the stakeholders were negotiating to change the design of the proposed block to a storey structure.
