Every hope NPP flag-bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, has been nursing that in the case of a disputed result in the 2012 Presidential election, certain countries will side with him and assist him to become President of Ghana at all cost has evaporated into thin air.
The evaporation process reached its full hog yesterday when Ivorian President, Alasane Quattara, sent a congratulatory message to Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama.
Akufo-Addo had pinned his hope on super-power, France, to rally to his cause in case of a disputed result at the December 7, 2012 Presidential elections and help him come to power even through force of arms as it did for Alasane Quattara.
The NPP flag-bearer had also courted the friendship of the Quattara government hoping that Ivorians will see an Akufo-Addo government as being in its interest than an NDC government and therefore assist France to help foist him, Akufo-Addo, on Ghanaians as their President.
However, the NPP’ flag-bearer’s hopes began crumbling like a pack of cards last weekend when French President, Francois Hollande, sent a congratulatory message to President Mahama in recognition of his victory at the polls.
With the hope of support from France dashed, Akufo-Addo, according to very close sources, pinned the rest of his hope on the Alasane Quattara government to back his claim that the Presidential results are in doubt and that he, Akufo-Addo, indeed won the election.
However, the last nail has been driven into his coffin with President Quattara’s congratulatory letter to President Mahama dated 17th December, 2012. The letter reads;
“Dear President, the Independent Electoral Commission of Ghana has just declared you winner of the Presidential elections that were held on 7 December, 2012.
According to all observers, including thenECOWAS Observations Mission, the elections were held in a peaceful and transparent atmosphere which honours Ghanaian democracy, which so many times has been cited as an example in both Africa and the world.
I take this opportunity to address, on behalf of the Ivorian people, the government and on my own behalf my heartfelt and warm congratulations for the confidence reposed in you by the brotherly people of Ghana.
I reiterate my readiness to work with your Excellency for the strengthening of the friendly relations and cooperations which fortunately exists between our two countries.
While expressing to you Mr. President and dear brother my wishes for full success in your lofty responsibility, please accept, your Excellency, the assurance of my highest and fraternal consideration.”
With the Ivorian President, congratulating President-elect, John Mahama, Akufo-Addo now finds himself and his party the only people who believe the elections was flawed. Certainly, he will not be receiving any help from France or Cote d’Ivoire in the unholy enterprise he has embarked on to dispute the result of the Presidential election. As far as the international community is concerned, he has been beaten fairly and squarely by President Mahama.
Meanwhile, yet another congratulatory message, this time from Chinese President, Mr. Hu Jintao, has landed on the desk of President Mahama. It reads in part;
“I am please to learn that Your Excellency has been elected President of the Republic of Ghana. On behalf of the Chinese government and people and in my own name, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations and good wishes to Your Excellency” the statement said.
