Rains destroy roads in B/A communities

Nkoranza (B/A) Oct. 14, (GNA - Rains have rendered the Nkoranza-Sekodumase road unmotorable cutting off communities along it from Nkoranza.

The communities include Akropong, Abuontam, Baanofour, Donkro- Nkwanta, Kyeradeso, Salamkrom, Chechewere, Nwoase and Anama, which produce notably maize, yams and other foodstuffs on a large scale. Drivers have refused to ply on the road and the people cannot therefore transport their farm produce to marketing centers. Mr. James Kwabena Appiah-Awuah, Nkoranza District Chief Executive and Mr. Adjei Yeboah, Presiding Member of the Assembly, as well as Nana Fosu Kyeremeh, Benkumhene of Nkoranza, on Monday visited the road to study the situation.

Mr. Vincent Osei Appiah, site engineer of Ussuya Ghana Limited, contractors working on the Sekodumase-Nkoranza stretch gave assurance to ensure spot maintenance of "difficult" parts of the road to enable drivers to ply to facilitate the movement of the people and their farm produce.

Ussuya Ghana Limited won the contract to rehabilitate the Sekodumase to Nkoranza road but are yet to tar it and the people have become increasingly apprehensive about the government's promise after the 2000 elections that the road would be tarred. Mr. Appiah said serious work on the road would begin after the spot maintenance works and appealed to the people to exercise restraint and the road would be tarred as declared by the government.
