Donkro-Nkwanta (B/A), March 6, GNA - A severe rainstorm has ripped off the roofing of several private and school buildings in Donkro-Nkwanta in Nkoranza South District. The buildings included the Deeper Life Church, classroom blocks of the District Assembly kindergarten and lower Primary School, King of Kings International School, Anglican Primary School and the District Assembly Junior High School. Fourteen out of the 17 structures at the local market has also collapsed.
Mr S. T. Barimah, Assemblyman for the area who conducted the Ghana News Agency round to inspect the affected buildings said the estimated cost of the damage was several thousands of Ghana cedis. Mr Barimah said more than 500 school children had been displaced and the community leaders were working towards the rehabilitation of the school buildings.
Nana Owusu Akyeaw Brempong, chief of the area, expressed regret about the disaster and said he wondered how the community could mobilize funds to re-roof the affected buildings. He expressed regret that at a period when the people were organising themselves to renovate the local police station and the community clinic, such disaster had occurred in the place. He called on officials of Nkoranza District Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation to liaise with the National Headquarters of the organization for assistance.
In a related development a rainstorm collapsed a four-bedroom house at Baanofour, also in the Nkoranza South District. Mr Cosmos Opoku, Assemblyman, said the landlord, Mr Kofi Amo and the 20 tenants were lodging with friends and relatives.
