Rare video of Kwame Nkrumah commissioning Tema Port pops up

A rare video which captured the commissioning of the Tema Harbour in 1962 by Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah has surfaced on the internet.

The video, monitored by GhanaWeb which highlighted the entire ceremony under two minutes captured not only the president and his entourage but some chiefs and boastful Ghanaians who graced the occasion then.

Another eye-catching in the video also monitored by GhanaWeb, captured a man dress as a clown with a placard around his neck with inscriptions that read, “Africa’s Messiah, your dream has been realized.”

The video was posted with the caption, “Footage of Dr Kwame Nkrumah formally opening the Tema Port on February 10, 1962, after unveiling the memorial plague, Nkrumah said the independent states of Africa should now be thinking seriously of ways and means of building up a common market of a United Africa” by Ghana Facts and History on December 19, 2019.

Construction of the Tema Harbour which now serves as the major exit and entry point of goods in the country began in the 1950s with its planning and consultation led by Ghana’s first architect, Theodore S. Clerk.
