Rawlings: Akufo-Addo deserves praise for NPP’s Electoral College expansion

The New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo must be commended for insisting on the expansion of the electoral college of the party, former President Jerry Rawlings has said.

According to him, the sheer size of the NPP’s Electoral College makes it difficult to bribe delegates who elect national executives of the party.

“The one thing that Akufo-Addo did for the NPP which deserves credit is that, in demanding for the expansion of the Electoral College, he took the number beyond 'bribability' and that worked for him and his party,” he told Adom FM,Thursday.

The NPP in 2009 expanded its electoral college from 2,340 delegates to about 115,000 delegates.

The former military leader who has declared support for his spokesperson, Kofi Adams, in the NDC's upcoming national executive elections says the party needs to increase the size of its electoral college in order to even the playing field for all candidates.

“I would have wished we (NDC) have done that a long time ago, but so long us we are going to hold on to this small number of people that can be bribed, we will always have problems,” he stated.
