Rawlings Commends Security Agencies Over Melcom Rescue

Ghana’s former President, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, has commended the security services for their high-level of professionalism during the search and rescue mission conducted after the Melcom disaster.

The former President said the competent nature of the rescue mission was so admirable even the Israeli assistance mission who travelled to Ghana had to leave early, having satisfied themselves that the situation was being handled with expertise.

President Rawlings also commended all the medical teams involved for their support in saving lives, when he presented an assortment of items valued at about 6000 cedis to victims of the disaster at the 37 Military hospital on Wednesday.

President Rawlings who was assisted by his daughter, Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings and Ms. Sylvia Ahorlu, General Secretary of the 31st December Women’s Movement, who represented Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, also visited the Accident and Trauma Unit where eight of the victims are still on admission.

The former President had kind words of encouragement for the victims and wished them speedy recovery.

In attendance were the Minister of Defence, General Joseph Smith, Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Augustine Blay and the Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, Brigadier General Kponyoh.

Items presented included bags of rice and sugar, cartons of Milo and Milo drink, gallons of cooking oil, boxes of mineral water, milk and biscuits.
