Nana Bofotia Boa-Amponsem the Second, Krontihene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, has appealed to paramount chiefs to re-assign the roles of sub and divisional chiefs, to conform to contemporary development processes.
He emphasized that the government must also resource the Chieftaincy institution well, to enable traditional rulers to lead development programmes.
The traditional ruler noted that, when adequately resourced, chieftaincy would be more viable and meaningful, and be in a better position to lead development efforts.
Nana Boa-Amponsem made the appeal in a press statement he issued and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Monday in Sunyani.
“Unlike the olden days when the chieftaincy institution was structured to wage wars to capture captives and land areas, today the trend has changed. In these modern times, the war is against poverty, illiteracy, hunger, disease and others.”
He stressed that sub and divisional chiefs like the Kronithene, Gyassehene, Sanaahene and Ankobeahene, can actively lead development processes, if paramount chiefs allow them do so.
He said divisional chiefs should be encouraged and well-motivated, to be more responsive in contributing to accelerated national development, especially in areas of Health, Education, Sanitation, Tourism and Culture.
Nana Boa-Amponsem observed that many communities were still under-developed, because some traditional rulers lacked resources to address the immediate needs of the local people.
