Mumford (C/R), Nov 30, GNA - The 2007 National Best Fisherman, Mr Kow Kotu, has appealed to the government to re-designate the Farmers Day to Farmers and Fishermen's Day to make the impact of fishermen also to be felt in the celebration of the day.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Mumford, in connection with the celebration of the Farmers' Day on Friday, December 3, Mr Kow Kotu urged the government to give equal treatment to farmers and fishermen in the presentation of prizes.
He said for the best farmer to be awarded a house whilst his counterpart - the best fishermen - is given a pick-up was not the best. The 2007 Best Fisherman said though they appreciated the gesture they felt a vehicle is not a property which is durable as a house. "It is our aim that our great grand-children will come and see the prize for our sweat and toil as fishermen for them to appreciate fishing as a business to pursue," he said.
Mr Kotu commended the government for approving the construction of a fishing harbour for Mumford and said it was a step in the right direction as the town could be counted among the leading fishing communities in the country. He said Mumford had produced three National Best Fishermen - in 2003, 2007 and 2008. 30 Nov 10
