Amid the growing public outcry, calls for an immediate reduction in data costs have received strong endorsement from various quarters, including the Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Mr. Ablakwa, in a Facebook post dated July 23, 2024, highlighted that affordable data is a necessity, not a luxury.

He said the current exorbitant data prices hinder the quality of democracy in Ghana, as many citizens are effectively priced out of participating in democratic processes.

“With access to information and the ability to engage in discourse being crucial components of a functioning democracy, high data costs prevent many Ghanaians from making their voices heard,” he stressed.

He emphasized to supporters of the movement that affordable data is essential for ensuring that all citizens can contribute to national discussions, access critical information, and engage with their representatives.

Meanwhile, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has stated that data charges in Ghana are relatively low, citing a cable.co.uk report.

The NCA examined a report that ranked Ghana as the second most cost-effective data country in West Africa and third in Africa.
