Regent of Gazeregu wanted in connection with chief's murder

Tamale, March 23, GNA - The Northern Regional Police Command, has declared Alhassan Tia, Regent of Garizhegu, a community in the Tamale North Constituency, and other man also called Tia, as wanted persons.

This is in connection with the murder of Andani Yakubu, the newly enskinned chief of the area, by some irate youth on Monday.

Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh, Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, disclosed these to GNA in Tamale on Tuesday.

He said that the Regent allegedly vowed before the chief's murder that if he came to the town after his enskinnment, he would be dealt with. Chief Insp. Tetteh said that Alhassan Tia supposedly mobilized the youth to oppose the enskinnment of Andani Yakubu, claiming that the final funeral rites of the late chief of the area were not performed before the enskinnment of the new chief by Sanarigu Naa.

Chief Insp. Tetteh said the Police had enough evidence to prosecute Yakubu Tia, Abubakari Tia, Musah Tia and Haruna Tia for the murder of Yak= ubu Andani.

He cautioned anybody who might be habouring Alhassan Tia to produce him else such a person would be charged for habouring a criminal if arrested. Chief Insp. Tetteh said 42 others who were arrested by the Police would be put before court on Wednesday for carrying offensive weapons and rioting with offensive weapons.

He said that Police patrol had been intensified in the area and said that the situation was calm and people were going about their normal duties.
