A Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) Mame Yaa Aboagye has advised citizens who have come out in their numbers to register for the voters’ register to adhere to the basic safety protocols while they register to perform their civic responsibility on December 7.
The Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, started compiling new voters register across the country after the Supreme Court gave clearance to the Commission to go ahead with its responsibility.
A cursory look at various registration centres indicates that the numbers were overwhelming and very difficult at some places for the basic safety protocol of social distancing to be observed.
But speaking in an interview, Mame Yaa Aboagye indicated that its imperative that individuals ensure the various protocols are adhered to to ensure that they are safe for election 2020.
According to her, the country needs every citizen alive and therefore there is the need to ensure strict adherence to the basic safety protocols at all registration centers across the country.
She, however, expressed shock at the current stance of the National Democratic Congress and their zeal in bringing out their members to register for the voters register when they said they will resist any attempt to put together a new voters’ register.
Mame Yaa noted that even if the NDC brings out their ancestors to register for the new voter's ID card, they will lose the election on December 7 when the country goes to the polls to elect a President and Members of Parliament.
“I have always questioned the integrity of the NDC especially when it comes to public discourse on issues concerning the ordinary Ghanaians. They have always kicked against the new voters’ register and I think it will be best for them to maintain their stand.
The EC is ready to ensure all qualified Ghanaians are registered. It is the right of every citizen to exercise their mandate through voting and it is equally the responsibility of the voter to register before you can enjoy such rights. So, let us be citizens and follow the necessary COVID-19 protocols and join the queue to register to vote. Elections belong to you. It is your decision and legal right. As for NDC, they can call all their ancestral fathers to come and register, they will still lose 2020 election.”
