Pressure Group CitizenGhana Movement is demanding from the Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo an immediate release of written declarations of all public office holders from January 1993 till present.
This is part of efforts by the group to among other things, fight corruption by bringing to bear facts surrounding the declaration of assets and liabilities by public officers and to finally resolve controversies surrounding same.
The group believes that the constitutional remit over the years has been shrouded in secrecy such that the details of which assets were declared and if or not they were declared in accordance with the law are unknown, leaving room for a lot of speculations and doubts.
“It is our belief that given the cardinal principles on which our Constitution is hinged – probity and accountability, the declaration of assets and liabilities by public office holders should not be shrouded in secrecy.”
Our next line of action in this broad strategy is to unravel the secrecy surrounding the declaration of assets and liabilities by public office holders. Consequently we have written to the Auditor General to furnish us with the written declarations of all public office holders from January 1993 till present.”
Failure on the part of the Auditor General to comply with their demands and furnish them with information according to them, will effect legal action.
“Should he refuse to honour our request, we shall immediately take legal action to compel him to do so.”
This won’t be the first call on the Auditor General as Pressure group, OccupyGhana also a week ago revamped its campaign to get the Auditor-General to verify assets and liabilities declared by public office holders.
Meanwhile, the group is looking forward to positive outcomes from court proceedings on Friday 9th February in its petition against the Electoral Commission for the release of information relating to the audited statement of accounts of all political parties as they are enjoined by Article 55(14) of the Constitution to submit to the EC.
