Released remand prisoners not seeking compensation – Legal Aid

The legal Aid Ghana says released remand prisoners are not willing to seek compensation.

On Friday March 27, some 23 inmates walked home free from the Nsawam Prisons after spending years on remand.

Some human rights campaigners have called for the state to compensate these inmates for the ordeal they have suffered.

But the Executive Director of Legal Aid Ghana, Alhasan Saini told Starr News seeking compensation for the released prisoners will be difficult.

“I wouldn’t say there may not be compensation for them. One: they may not be aware of it, or they are content that they have gained their freedom after all and, therefore, do not want to complicate things by engaging the system again.

“Otherwise, if they make that demand, for a lot of them, they may secure something,” he explained.
