Remain at post until issues are resolved - GTEC directs UCC Vice-Chancellor

UCC Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong UCC Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong

Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong has been directed by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to stay in his role as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) until the Commission has finished looking into the circumstances behind his dismissal.

In order to resolve the issue, GTEC's instruction emphasized the importance of due process.

According to the Commission, it has not heard from the UCC Council in opposition to the alleged two-year extension of Prof. Boampong's term.

The appointment of Professor Boampong was terminated by the UCC Governing Council on August 1.

June 2020 marked the start of his first four-year tenure, which officially ended on July 31, 2024.

A statement written by Prof. Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, the chairman of the university's governing council, declared the extension null and void despite a rumored two-year extension of his term.

GTEC responded to these developments with a statement on Friday, August 2, making it clear that it will share its final stance after all matters have been fully resolved.

“In the meantime, given the University had previously communicated the appointment of Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong as Vice Chancellor for a further term of two (2) years to the Commission (GTEC), and there being no communication to the contrary from the Council of the University, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong is to remain at the post as Vice-Chancellor until the Commission has examined the issues arising and communicated its position," the statement said, as reported by myjoyonline.com.

Concurrently, GTEC directed the university's administration to furnish all pertinent records regarding the extension and alleged termination of the Vice-Chancellor's employment.

“Given the Commission’s mandate to ensure that the management of the University is not interrupted, you are hereby directed to furnish the Commission with all documents concerning the renewal and purported termination of the Vice Chancellor’s appointment as all correspondences, court processes and communique on the matter to the Commission by Friday, 9th August 2024," it added.
