Tema, Feb. 8, GNA - A remand prisoner at the Tema Community Two police cells, has smeared human excreta on the station's Crime Officer and two other officials to prevent his transfer to the Nsawam prison. Kingsley Martey, who has been remanded into prison custody by the Tema Circuit Court 'A' for an impending case, pleaded not guilty to three counts of offensive conduct when he appeared before the same court on Monday. The court presided over by Mrs Lorinda Owusu, was told by the prosecution that on January 22, two officials of the station, an Inspector and Corporal were instructed by the Crime Officer, who is an Assistant Commissioner of Police, to transport the remand prisoners to Nsawam prison. Chief Inspector Matilda Tetteh, prosecuting said Martey refused to come out of the cell to join the other inmates in the van to be taken to the prison. The facts had it that Martey scooped some faeces from the water closet in the cell and smeared it on the Crime Officer, who tried to convince him to join the others.
The accused also smeared some of the faeces on the two other police officials, who tried to intervene. The accused, who was re-arrested, refused to give his caution statement to the police, stating that he would not give his statement unless his lawyer was brought to the station.
Martey told the court that he had not committed the offence noting that "the other inmates can bear me witness". The court remanded him to re-appear on March 4, this year. 8 Feb. 10
