A spare parts importer and dealer says the scraping of import taxes on spare parts would help to reduce road crashes which have become a major source of high degree injuries, disability and deaths in the country.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Yaw Larbi said: “This tax scrap goes beyond the business of selling spare parts. It is a life saving measure.”

According to Mr Larbi, due to the high cost of spare parts as a result of high import taxes, lot car owners consciously or unconsciously allow mechanics to do alteration on old and disused parts while others resort to fake parts which bring about frequent auto and electrical malfunction in cars.

He called on government to reduce the bureaucracy associated with importation, setting up of business and tax administration to encourage local investors.

“Government should also establish a two-way consultation mechanism with businesses to know their challenges and strengths as we also get to know what is possible and impossible in governance,” he said.
