Renowned Ghanaian Mathematical Physicist, Prof. Francis Kofi Allotey has died, Kasapafmonline.com can confirm.
The former Head of the Mathematics Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology who’s globally known, passed on Thursday night.
A family member who confirmed the sad news to this website said the good old professor had woken up in good condition and was preparing to attend a meeting but around 10am Thursday complained of ill health and was sent to the hospital for treatment and later came back home. He subsequently complained again of uneasiness and was sent to the hospital and died shortly thereafter.
The 85 year old academic was scheduled to travel abroad tomorrow Saturday November 4, 2017 for a UNESCO General Conference after his event ‘Prof. Francis Kofi Ampenyin Allotey Centre’ was made a Centre of Excellence by the world body.
Francis Kofi Allotey (born 1932 in Saltpond, Ghana) is a Ghanaian mathematical physicist.
He is known for the “Allotey Formalism” which arose from his work on soft X-ray spectroscopy.
A founding fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, in 1974 he became the first Ghanaian full professor of mathematics and head of the Department of Mathematics at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
He was the first year student of Ghana National College when the school was in July, 1948 by Dr. Nkrumah
Allotey is the President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of a number of international scientific organizations including the International Institute of Theoretical and Applied Physics (ICTP) Scientific Council since 1996. He is the Chairman of Board of Trustees of the Accra Institute of Technology (AIT), the President of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Ghana (AIMS-Ghana) and the President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS). He is holder of master’s and doctorate degrees from Princeton University and the diploma of Imperial College (1960). He is an honorary fellow of the IOP Institute of Physics.
The Professor Francis Allotey Graduate School was established in 2009 at the Accra Institute of Technology[He died on the 2nd of November 2017.
