Renowned medical surgeon and former Council of State member from the Upper West Region, Dr. Edward N. Gyader, has died, MyNewsGh.com has confirmed.

According to close family sources, the seasoned medical doctor and former Dean of the University for Development Studies Medical School passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.

Details of the funeral arrangements will be announced later, according to family sources.

About Dr. Gyader

Dr. Edward Gyader was born in Nandom in the Upper West Region and attended Tamale Secondary School.

He qualified as a doctor at the University of Bologna and later as a surgeon at the University of Padova between 1966 and 1977.

He returned to Ghana in 1978 and was appointed Senior Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, and posted to Jirapa Hospital as Medical Superintendent and Surgeon in Charge. He spent all his professional practice in Jirapa and Wa, with a short spell in Burkina Faso. On many occasions, he was the only doctor and surgeon in the Wa Regional Hospital and sometimes in the entire Upper West Region.

His contributions to the health sector during this period include holding administrative positions in the hospitals he worked in, as well as practicing as a surgeon.

He also served on the Central Council of the Ghana Red Cross Society, chaired the Upper West Regional Consultative Council, was the Presiding Member of the Lawra District Assembly (1989–1992), and was a member of the 1991/92 Consultative Assembly which drafted the current constitution of Ghana. He served on the Executive Council of the Association from 1997-2001 and as the Upper West Divisional Chairman from 1995-2003. During these eight years, he dedicated his time, experience, and wisdom to the advancement of the Association.

From 1995 to 2000, he also served on the Medical and Dental Council. He later served as a Member of the Council of State and the Dean of the Medical School of UDS before retiring permanently.
