New Edubiase (Ash), April 7, GNA - Residents of New Edubiase, the district capital of the Adansi South district of Ashanti, have threatened to block the town road currently being used by vehicles from the Central and Western regions to Kumasi if the caved in portion of the main highway is not repaired immediately.
They contend that the excessively heavy traffic using the town road, which was being rehabilitated, has affected work on the road since the first coating of the road had peeled off. The residents say there had also recorded a number of accidents in the town while it had become almost impossible for the contractor to continue his work.
The threat was made at the People's Assembly held at New Edubiase on Wednesday.
They therefore, called on the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to work on the caved in portion of the Kumasi-Cape Coast road at New Edubiase as a matter of urgency to avoid being compelled to stop vehicles from passing through the middle of the town.
The portion of the road caved in since March 21, this year and personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have since been directing traffic to avoid accidents.
The people also complained about the high cost of lorry fares in the district and accused some drivers of charging over and above the 50 per cent increase approved by the government and asked that the drivers be compelled to charge the approved fares.
Earlier, Dr Kwame Addo-Kufuor, Defence Minister, had told the people that the economy was on the right track as a result of the good work of the government.
Following this, he said, inflation had gone down to 12.1 per cent and would be reduced further while interest rates had also dropped to about 19 per cent.
Dr Addo Kufuor said due to the peace being enjoyed in the country and the prudent economic policies and management, Ghana has been described as one of the credit worthy countries in the world.
