Residents in Upper East Region demand urgent action on abandoned Uwasi-Fumbisi road

Residents and commuters in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region have raised concerns over the abandoned Uwasi-Fumbisi Road, which they claim was left in a state of disrepair following what they describe as “substandard” construction by a politically connected contractor.

The 33.5-kilometre road, awarded on April 5, 2018, to Samba Co. Ltd., owned by the Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Samba, has become a significant source of frustration for the local community.

The road, initially constructed in 2019 just before the 2020 elections, was plagued by poor workmanship, leaving it in a hazardous condition.

Residents reported that the culverts installed on the road were washed away by heavy rains shortly after being covered with gravel, exacerbating the already dire state of the road.

Despite numerous appeals to the contractor for repairs, the site has remained deserted, with no corrective measures taken.

The Uwasi-Fumbisi Road is vital for the residents, serving as the primary route to the Fumbisi market and Jadema in the North East Region.

The current poor condition of the road has severely affected travel and trade, leaving the community feeling abandoned and neglected.

Akusung Wisdom, the Assembly Member for the Uwasi electoral area, expressed deep disappointment over the situation.

“The state of the road has had a significant negative impact on travel and trade in our community. We feel completely neglected, and it is imperative that the relevant authorities intervene immediately,” he said.

The District Chief Executive, Daniel Kwame Gariba, who also serves as the Parliamentary Candidate for the NPP in the area, has not yet commented on the issue.

The community is, therefore, calling for urgent action to address the road's poor condition and ensure that it is properly maintained to support local residents and economic activities.
