Rev. Dr. Stephen Wengam, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Ghana shares insights into his relationship with President John Dramani Mahama, as well as the spiritual guidance he has offered over the years.

In an interview with Keminni Nyamanni Amanor on Hot Issues, Dr. Wengam revealed that his first connection with President Mahama dates back several years when Mahama and his family became members of the Ringway Gospel Center in Accra.

Wengam, then an associate pastor, recalled how Mahama followed his wife into the church.

“He became a committed member in 2005 after his wife and children joined the church a couple of years earlier. From the moment he joined, he was fully integrated into the church life, fulfilling all the requirements and remaining a dedicated member,” he said.

According to Wengam, Mahama’s commitment to his faith has been unwavering throughout the years.

“He is an active member of two departments—Sunday school and the Men’s Ministry,” Wengam stated.

“He has even risen to become a lay preacher in the church and has had the opportunity to preach on multiple occasions, including during Father’s Day and Men’s Ministry Day,” he added.

Wengam continued to emphasise Mahama’s deep faith, recalling moments where Mahama made his Christian beliefs a public priority.

“When he won the elections, his family was there to celebrate, but he insisted on meeting with his church family first.

“He has never shied away from telling the world that he is a Christian and a member of Assemblies of God. In fact, during his campaign, he made it clear that his stance on the LGBTQ+ issue was rooted in the doctrines of our church,” he added.

The reverend also highlighted Mahama’s milestones within the church.

“I remember when he and his wife renewed their vows on their 15th wedding anniversary.

“They did the same for their 30th. All of their children were baptized and dedicated to the church,” Wengam remarked with pride.

As the first Assemblies of God member globally to become President, Mahama holds a special place in the hearts of his fellow church members.

Wengam also shared that during the 100th centenary celebration of the Assemblies of God, Mahama was invited as a special guest of honour.

“We are very proud of him...he is the first Pentecostal Charismatic Christian to hold the office of President in Ghana,” Rev. Wengam said while noting the significance of Mahama’s rise to the presidency.
