Kumasi, March 17, GNA - Mr Paul Osei Kwame, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional branch of the District Assemblies Revenue Collectors Association, has called for "proper" recognition of revenue collectors at the assemblies to enable them perform their duties efficiently. He said revenue collectors, who were the "lifewire" of the district assemblies, were often ignored and placed at the background of activities by the local authorities.
This said has affected the performance of the revenue collectors leading to the low level of revenue generation by most of the assemblies, Mr Osei Kwame told a meeting of members of the association in Kumasi on Tuesday.
He expressed regret that most revenue collectors remained in the field for more than 20 years without promotion or upgrading of their skills.
Mr Osei Kwame therefore appealed to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to create a separate department for revenue collectors with a head who would be accountable to all revenue activities in the districts to ensure smooth supervision and monitoring of revenue workers.
He called for the establishment of branches of the association throughout the country to champion the course of revenue collectors and improve their skills in revenue generation efforts of the assemblies.
