Road crashes claim 145 lives in Bono, Bono East and Ahafo

The Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions have recorded 145 deaths and 288 injuries through road crashes involving 233 vehicles in the first quarter of this year.

It included 108 commercial vehicles, 47 private vehicles and 78 motorcycles, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Stephen Tenkorang, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander for the three Regions told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Monday in Sunyani.

DSP Tenkorang said out of the number 114 were males and 31 females while, 123 of the deceased were above 18 years.

He said total number of cases reported were 156 which consisted of 65 fatal, 60 serious injuries and 31 minor injuries while pedestrian knockdowns were 24.

DSP Tenkorang assured the MTTD would intensify education of drivers about road traffic regulations to reduce road carnage in the regions.

He charged drivers to be more professional in observing road signs and obeying traffic rules and regulations to augment the MTTD and National Road Safety Commission’s effort to decrease to the barest minimum, if not total prevention of road accidents in the country.

DSP Tenkorang advised drivers and vehicle owners to maintain their vehicles regularly to avoid crashes as a result of faulty car parts.
