Accra, Dec. 19, GNA - Dr Owuraku Sakyi-Dawson, Senior Lecturer of the University of Ghana, sustained a deep cut on his forehead when two armed robbers attacked him and his family at their Lower Hill Residence on Legon Campus.
In an interview with GNA, Dr Sakyi-Dawson, who lectures at the Agricultural Extension Department, said at about a quarter to midnight Sunday, the armed robbers, came to his residence through a footpath and used a huge stone to break the door to gain access to his sitting room. The two armed robbers then took hostage of his two daughters, who were watching a film on the TV in the room.
He said while one of robbers remained guarding the main entrance to the house, the other pointed a gun at his daughters and asked them to call him from the bedroom.
Dr Sakyi-Dawson said when he attended to the call, the robber trained the gun he was holding on him.
He said he asked the robber what he wanted to take away and just as he was about to answer he held the barrel of the gun and it went off. As they continued to struggle, the other robber came in and hit him with the butt of his gun opening a deep cut on his forehead and he began to bleed profusely.
Dr Sakyi-Dawson said the discharge of the gun attracted the attention of neighbours, who raised the alarm and called the local Police Patrol for assistance.
Sensing danger, the robbers abandoned their enterprise and fled without taking anything away.
Professor Sefa Dede, also of the University, took Dr Sakyi-Dawson to the University Hospital that night and after he had been treated he went to lodge a complaint at the Legon District Police Headquarters. In another development, on the same night, thieves broke into the residence of Professor Abotsi of the University; locked up his wife in one of the rooms; ransacked the house; collected jewellery, phones and undisclosed substantial amount of money.
The robbers later asked for the car key of Professor Abotsi, who was not at home and they drove it away.
Fortunately when they got to a tennis court behind the Commonwealth Hall they missed the road and drove along a footpath that led them into a ditch. They subsequently abandoned the vehicle and escaped with their booty. 19 Dec. 06
