Robbery affecting revenue generation in Pru District

Yeji (B/A), June 10, GNA - The Pru District Assembly, in the Brong-Ahafo Rgion, has disclosed that, it is loosing a substantial amount of the internally generated revenue, due to the activities of armed robbers lately.

Mr Iddrisu Seidu, Principal Revenue Superintendent of the assembly, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency at Yeji, on Wednesday, noted that the armed robbery had deprived the assembly of significant revenue.

Their operations on the Ejura-Yeji road have deterred traders from travelling to Yeji, for fear of being robbed of their monies and goods, sometimes even during daytime, he said.

Mr Seidu said the menace had caused a drastic reduction in revenue generation.

He said the assembly was generating GHC 17,000.00 a month but this has plummeted with the dwindling of the number of traders to the market, he added.

The revenue superintendent said about two months ago armed robbers attacked a group of traders near Yeji in which one trader lost GHC 5,000.00.

He said the robbers were alleged to have succeeded in robbing other traders on their way to Kwame Danso and Kajeji, in the Sene District, and one of the traders lost GHC 15,000.00.

Mr Seidu said despite the insecurity for traders, the assembly's efforts to meet its internal revenue targets were encouraging, as currently they could generate about GHC 20,000.00 a month, believing that the figure could have been higher had it not been the activities of armed robbers.

The assembly, as a preventive measure has decided to establish a permanent police barrier at Kobire, a village about a kilometre away from Yeji, where the robbers usually hide under a bridge to attack unsuspecting victims.
