Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has described his selection as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the pinnacle of his political career.
Speaking during an interview with Umaru Sanda on Channel One, NAPO shared insights into his career highlights, including his experiences in ministerial roles.
When asked about his greatest achievement in politics, he responded without hesitation: “Being the running mate of Dr. Bawumia has been the greatest honor of my career. It is a unique and esteemed opportunity to serve in that capacity for a major party like the New Patriotic Party (NPP).”
NAPO’s declaration underscores the pride and sense of responsibility he feels in being entrusted with such a significant position within the party. The role not only marks a personal milestone but also places him among the ranks of those shaping the political direction of the NPP and the country.
Reflecting on his time as a government minister, NAPO revealed that while his tenure as Minister of Energy was impactful, it was his stint as Minister of Education that left a lasting impression on him—though not necessarily for the reasons one might expect.
“My time as Minister of Education was the most challenging. It wasn’t enjoyable because of how demanding the role was,” he admitted.
Despite the difficulties, NAPO expressed pride in the contributions he made during his tenure. He highlighted his efforts to introduce innovative policies that reshaped the education sector, acknowledging that these achievements left a lasting legacy.
Dr. Prempeh’s tenure as Minister of Education saw him implement transformative policies, such as the Free Senior High School program and other reforms aimed at improving access and quality in education. These initiatives were met with both praise and criticism, reflecting the high-stakes nature of the role.
