SADA, NADMO organise disaster risk reduction forum

A regional forum on the implementation of the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) project on Disaster Risks Reduction (DRR) in the Northern Savanna Ecological Zone of Ghana was organized in Bolgatanga on Thursday.

The event that was jointly organized by SADA and the National Disaster Mobilization Organisation (NADMO), was aimed at discussing ways of harnessing resources and energies towards the successful implementation of the second phase of the DRR.

Mr. Chris Anaab, Social Development and Gender Officer at the SADA, said the mandate of SADA was to ensure improvement in the lives of the people in its operational areas.

He asked stakeholders in disaster management to help SADA to prevent disasters in the Upper East, Northern and Upper West Regions.

Mr Alfred Saawug, Upper East Regional NADMO Coordinator, said floods claimed 34 lives in 2007 in the region, 14 in 2010, and 12 in 2012, and said the roofs of some 130 schools were ripped off by storm in 2011.

He said prevention of disasters ought to be the concern of everyone because of their effects on national development.

Mr Saawug said NADMO had formed 38 disaster groups tasked to linked with financial institutions to access Gh¢300,000, to support people to undertake basket weaving and pito brewing and other income generating activities.
