Over 100 residents of Salaga in the East Gonja district of the Northern region have been rendered homeless following a wild rainstorm that hit the area Monday evening.

The rainstorm which lasted for close to two hours ripped off roofs of 25 houses causing destruction to property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

The torrential rains also damaged electricity poles and affected connection plunging the district capital into total darkness.

"It starter around 4pm. It came with storm and wiped out houses; as at now we cannot tell the number of houses but the extent of damage is serious," an affected resident told Starr News.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) are yet to receive relief items from their headquarters in Accra, leaving residents stranded and helpless.
As at the time of this report, residents say officials from NADMO were yet to visit the scene of the disaster.

Some of the affected residents are currently living with friends and relatives in nearby homes.

Starr News has learned that over 400 people have so far been displaced and properties of huge number destroyed within two months in the rainfalls the region has recorded.
