The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has suspended the salaries of 3,794 workers on the country's mechanized payroll effective October 2015 permanently.

The affected workers, according to the CAGD, have no Social Security numbers.

Out of the number, 2,647 are employees of the Ghana Education Service (GES) with the remaining 1,147 being employees in other sectors.

This was contained in a note dated October 13, 2015, and signed by Grace Adzroe, Controller and Accountant General and circulated among all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

The CAGD, in June 2015, reported that there were 27, 805 employees who did not have social security numbers on the payroll system.

It accordingly advised all employees without Social Security numbers to provide the requisite information through their respective Personnel Processing Sections (PPS) for the number to be captured on the payroll system.

But as at the end of September 2015, 24,011 employees had heeded to the advice of the CADG remaining 3,794.

The 3,794 employees, according to the directive, will not receive their salaries beginning from October 2015.

The update of the social security information of employees on the payroll system was aimed at cleaning the mechanized payroll database, which forms part of the Public Financial Management Reform program.
